It's a Rocky Road when you're trying to lose weight.

You know you have a problem when you watch the Biggest Loser and eat Rocky Road Ice Cream. Yes, I did. More on that later. After the show, I went for a run. I like to run and I like to eat. 5 miles tonite in just over an hour. I felt good in the beginning. Legs felt tired in the middle, but then I recovered in the end. You can see in the graph, all 3 of my walk breaks were in the middle.
Jim is gone on Biggest Loser. Jim is one of the twins. The three ladies and Jez teamed up to out him. Which makes his brother, Bill a marked man. Bill better be the biggest loser on the black team every week if he wants to stay. Bob's Waddlers and Dan's Eliminating the Excess are one and two in our Fantasy League. Check out the standings and visit the blogs of each team. Some of our team owners could have competed well on this show. Speaking of losing weight. . . I'm not doing so well.

Yeah, the toes are scary. What's worse is the number 229.5. I've been in the 220's all year. I burn alot of calories, but I eat just as many. So, this is my time to make a stand. I am going to be under 210 at Thanksgiving. 43 days to lose 20 pounds. 0.465 pounds a day. Each Tuesday you'll get to see the scale and my progress. Wish me luck.

Wow sounds like a challenge to me. How about my 15lbs to your 22lbs (10% of total body weight) by Dec 1st winner gets a $50 gift certificate of their choice.

You can definitely do this Pat. I look forward to cheering you on along the way.

Pat don't forget to subtract like 7 pounds for the camera you are holding.

Biggest loser was very good last night and my team is back in the hunt.

I would love to get in to the challenge with you and Margie but I am not sure if I am up for it. I am about 233 right now.

Good luck with your personal challenge! 20 lbs in 43 days seems like a really high goal to me, but I have also heard it is easier for men to lose weight quickly, so what do I know? Anyway, best of luck with it! Any positive changes you can make between now and then - whether you hit your goal mark or come up a little shy - are great!

Pat,

Aside from good ol' cardiovascular, you need muscle tissue to keep your metabolism up. If you aren't already, throw in 30 minutes of weight training once or twice a week. If you challenge yourself with the weights (as opposed to lifting just what you can easily) you will quickly add some good solid muscle.

BTW, the eating might be seasonal too. As the weather turns cooler, I have a tendency to try to add pounds. Yesterday I ran two miles, then last night I had about 10 dark chocolate Hershey's kisses and Haagen-Daaz Vanilla Bean ice cream. I am supposed to be dipping below 170, but instead I am popping up over 185. It happens. I'll rest, then run and lift harder.

I have also heard over and over again that I need to add weights to really lose weight. I can't seem to get excited about lifting weights though. Maybe when we do our long group runs we should stop and do some lifting intervals.

Good luck on the 20 pounds! I am right there with ya!

Ooooohhh that sounds a little drastic Pat?! What's your game plan?

I gained about 15 pounds when I was out with the costo-mess (took me 15 pounds to remember you can't continue to eat like a runner when you can't run...). When I finally was able to start lifting again I lost 10 right away (well a month, but that's fast for me). So I agree with J-mom, we all need to get excited about keeping up some strength workouts!

Excited to hear about your progress - you are one determinded guy!

Pat, I’m eating a bag of chips as I read your post! Good luck with the 0.465374637 lbs per day!

I ate chip and dip while I watched the show last night. I kept saying this is so inspirational as I shoved another one into my mouth!

I'm with you, buddy. I think I might finally be back on track too. I was down a couple anyway, and haven't self sabotaged it yet. :)

GOOD LUCK!!

Best of luck with the loss Pat. The week after my marathon in September I tipped the scales at 227, today when I got on the scales I was at 217. Like you I would like to be at or under 210 by my next marathon on November 18...the Sunday before Thanksgiving. I will try to keep you posted on my progress....Good Luck!!!!

Great goal, Pat! Seems like a lot of us biggest loser types are struggling trying to find our old losing form. I'm with you and look forward to reading about your success!

Was also wondering what the correlation is between weight and running speed. How much faster do you think you'll be at 210 vs. 229.5?

there's some studies about how much a pound weighs you down (pun intended), I'll have to find the info and do a post on it.

I'm thinking it might make me a world class athlete.

Seriously, think about running a 5k carrying a 20 lbs bowling ball. Not sure I could finish.

LOL -- yeah, I always think about that when The Biggest Loser does the "carry what you lost" challenge. I know I couldn't do half of it. Can't believe I did it for so long!

I missed this week's show!

Nice 5 miler, there, Pat! As for the rocky road ice cream... well put the spoon down and step away from the carton!

PS:
you never said what you have in common with Train. Inquiring minds want to know, well at least I do.

Irene, I have the same name as the lead singer of Train. Pat Monahan.

Pat, I love your blog. Watching Biggest Loser insprires me, and I run around the living room with weights, etc. THEN I sit down and eat the ice cream :-) Good luck with the weight loss goal. I have 120 pounds to lose. (Down 30 lbs since May). Imagine running a 5K with another person on your back!

Good Luck Pat. Just try hard to fight the urge to eat crappy. Find a vegatable and eat as much as you want of it.
